New York high school in trouble over illegal school trip to Cuba

Filed under: Places To Go, Health & Safety: Babies, Media, Day Care & Education

A group of New York City public high school students took a fun and interesting school-sponsored spring break trip to the communist island of Cuba this year, but there was only one problem: it is illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba except under very tightly-restricted circumstances. NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg's office is investigating whether the trip violated U.S. State Department travel restrictions. Occasionally the government grants permission for educational visits to the island, but only for college-aged students, never for high school or younger.

Those who violate the restrictions can face penalties that range anywhere from a warning to a $65,000 fine. Students applied to the school to go on the trip, wrote an essay as part of their applications, and paid for the trip themselves. According to the school's website, about 30 students were selected for this year's trip.

At least they didn't go to Aruba and get drunk with homicidal Dutch kids with lawyer fathers!
